The short answer
ChatGPT ads are labelled sponsored units that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT answers for users on the Free and Go plans. Advertisers buy them in ChatGPT Ads Manager, target by conversation context instead of keywords, bid on cost per click or CPM, and track results with a pixel or Conversions API. Self-serve opened to US businesses in May 2026 and ads reached 89 countries by October 2026. For most businesses, they are worth a small, tracked test alongside Google and Meta, judged on cost per customer.
Searches for "ads in ChatGPT", "OpenAI ads" and "ChatGPT Ads Manager" climbed through 2026 in the US, the UAE and Australia. Business owners who already spend on Meta and Google want to know two things: how advertising in ChatGPT actually works, and whether it deserves part of next quarter's budget. This guide answers both from a performance marketer's point of view, with the facts dated so you know what was true when I wrote it.
What are ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI shows inside ChatGPT conversations. A labelled sponsored unit appears below ChatGPT's answer, separate from the answer itself, when the conversation is relevant to the advertiser's offer. A typical unit shows the advertiser name and icon, a short headline, a line of copy, an image and a link to a landing page.
OpenAI's stated principle is that ads do not change what ChatGPT says. The answer is generated first and independently; the ad sits underneath it. For advertisers, that means you cannot buy your way into the answer text. You buy a placement next to a conversation where someone is already thinking about your category.
How ChatGPT advertising rolled out in 2026
| Date (2026) | What happened |
|---|---|
| 16 January | OpenAI confirmed advertising was coming to ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. |
| 9 February | US test began with a small group of large advertisers, sold on a CPM basis (reported around $60 per thousand impressions). |
| 5 May | Self-serve Ads Manager opened to US businesses, adding cost-per-click bidding, a pixel and a Conversions API. |
| June to September | Rollout to the UK, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, 31 European markets, India and Southeast Asia. |
| 21 October | 26 more countries added, taking ChatGPT ads to 89 countries. |
The pace matters. In nine months ChatGPT advertising went from an announcement to a self-serve auction in most major markets. If you are in Dubai, Sydney or Auckland, check the country list inside Ads Manager for your market, because availability for advertisers and for users can differ by country and changes quickly.
How ChatGPT ads work: targeting, bidding and measurement
Targeting by conversation context, not keywords
Google Ads is built on keywords and search intent. ChatGPT ads use what OpenAI calls context hints: short descriptions of the conversation topics where your ad should be eligible, combined with signals from your headline, copy and landing page. There are no match types and no search terms report in the Google sense. You describe the situation your customer is in, and the system matches your ad to conversations that fit.
Advertisers can also upload custom audiences from customer lists, exclude locations and choose platforms (web, iOS or Android app).
Bidding: CPM or CPC
The first test was sold on CPM. Self-serve campaigns can now bid on cost per click, and conversion-focused objectives followed. Early reports put US cost per click roughly between $2 and $8 depending on the category, which is in the range of many Google Search categories, not the range of cheap social clicks. There is no large minimum spend in self-serve, although daily budget floors apply by currency.
Conversion tracking
Measurement works much like Meta: a pixel on your website, a server-side Conversions API, and UTM parameters for GA4. Reporting is aggregated. You see impressions, clicks, CTR, cost per click, conversions and return on ad spend, but never the user's conversation.
Who sees ads, and who does not
- Ads appear on the Free and Go plans. Paid Plus, Pro and Enterprise users do not see ads.
- Users who are, or are predicted to be, under 18 do not see ads.
- OpenAI said ads would not appear next to sensitive topics such as health, mental health and politics, and regulated categories face extra restrictions.
ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads vs Meta Ads
| Factor | ChatGPT ads | Google Ads | Meta Ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer state | Researching, comparing, planning | Searching with intent | Scrolling, not searching |
| Targeting | Conversation context hints | Keywords and audiences | Broad, lookalike and Advantage+ |
| Bidding | CPC or CPM, conversion objectives | Smart bidding, target CPA and ROAS | Lowest cost, cost cap, ROAS goal |
| Tracking | Pixel, Conversions API, UTMs | Google tag, GA4, enhanced conversions | Meta Pixel, Conversions API |
| Maturity | New, few optimisation levers | Mature | Mature |
| Best use today | Controlled test budget | Capture existing demand | Create demand and retarget |

Who should test ChatGPT ads now
ChatGPT conversations are long and considered. People ask for comparisons, plans and recommendations before they buy. That favours businesses where the buyer researches:
- B2B services and software: "best CRM for a 10-person sales team", "how to automate lead follow-up".
- Education and courses: program comparisons, career changes, study plans.
- High-consideration e-commerce: products people research before buying.
- Professional services with a clear offer and a landing page that answers the obvious questions.
Hold off if you are a local service business that depends on tight geo-targeting, or if you are in a regulated category such as health or finance, where the rules are still being written. For local businesses, Google Ads and Google Business Profile still do the heavy lifting.
A simple ChatGPT ads test plan
- Fix tracking firstInstall the pixel and the Conversions API, and send the same lead or purchase events you already send to Meta and Google, so cost per customer is comparable across all three.
- Write context hints from real questionsUse the questions your sales team hears and the queries in your Search Console. Describe the situation, not a keyword list.
- Send clicks to an answer pageA landing page that answers the comparison question directly converts better than a generic homepage.
- Ring-fence the budgetStart with a fixed test budget, often 5 to 10 percent of what you spend on search, for 30 to 45 days.
- Judge on cost per customerCompare cost per qualified lead or sale against Google and Meta, not click-through rate. Keep, cut or scale on that number alone.
The other half: being recommended in ChatGPT without paying
Paid placements sit under the answer. Being named inside the answer is earned. ChatGPT and other AI assistants recommend businesses whose websites answer questions clearly, use structured data, and are mentioned on other trusted sites. That is the same work as good SEO: clear service pages, real case studies, consistent business details and links from relevant publications. I build every page on this site that way, and it is part of how I approach AI marketing for clients.
ChatGPT ads questions
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
The US launch was reported at around $60 CPM. Self-serve campaigns now mostly bid on cost per click, with early reported CPCs of about $2 to $8 depending on category. Your real cost depends on competition for the conversations you target.
Can businesses in the UAE or Australia run ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT ads reached 89 countries in October 2026, but advertiser eligibility and self-serve access vary by market. Check the country list in ChatGPT Ads Manager before planning a campaign, and expect availability to keep changing.
Do ChatGPT ads influence ChatGPT's answers?
OpenAI says no. Ads are shown separately, below the answer, and are clearly labelled as sponsored.
Should I move budget from Google or Meta into ChatGPT ads?
Not wholesale. Keep your proven channels running and fund a small, tracked test. Move budget only when ChatGPT ads beat your existing cost per customer over a meaningful sample.
