The short answer

Google Local Services Ads charge per lead and sit at the very top of local search results with a Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge, but you only control job types and service area. Regular Google Ads charge per click and give you full control of keywords, negative keywords, bids and landing pages. Eligible US service businesses with good reviews and fast phone answering should usually run both; businesses in the UAE and Australia mostly cannot use LSA and rely on Search, Performance Max and Google Business Profile.

"Google local service ads" is one of the most searched Google advertising topics in the US this year, usually by plumbers, roofers, cleaners, lawyers and other service businesses who see competitors with a green tick at the top of the results. The question I get on calls is simple: should I run Local Services Ads, regular Google Ads, or both? Here is how I decide.

What are Google Local Services Ads?

Google Local Services Ads (LSA) are pay-per-lead ads for local service businesses. They appear at the very top of Google search results for searches like "plumber near me", above the regular search ads, and show your business name, star rating, review count, service area and a verification badge such as Google Guaranteed or Google Screened.

The difference that matters most: you pay per lead, not per click. A lead is a phone call, message or booking request that comes through the ad. If a lead is clearly invalid, such as a wrong number, spam or a service you do not offer, you can dispute it and may get a credit.

How Local Services Ads work

  • Verification first. Google checks your business, licence and insurance, and for some categories runs background checks, before your ads can show.
  • No keywords. You choose job types and service areas. Google decides which searches match your profile.
  • Ranking. Position depends on proximity to the searcher, your review rating and count, how quickly you answer calls and messages, your business hours and your budget.
  • Budget. You set a weekly budget and Google estimates how many leads it buys. Cost per lead varies widely by trade and city; many home service categories in the US land somewhere between $20 and $100+ per lead.
  • Availability. LSA is available in the US, Canada, the UK and a number of European countries for selected categories. It is not available for most categories in Australia or the UAE, where Search and Performance Max campaigns remain the main tools. Check Google's eligibility page for your country and trade.

When Local Services Ads win

  • You are in an LSA category and country, such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical, locksmith, cleaning, roofing, legal or real estate in the US.
  • You answer the phone fast. LSA rewards responsiveness, and missed calls push you down.
  • You already have strong Google reviews, or a plan to get them.
  • You do not have a landing page or the time to manage keywords and bids.
  • Your service is not an LSA category, or LSA is not available in your country, which is the case for most businesses in Dubai and Australia.
  • You want specific high-value jobs. With keywords and negative keywords you can target "commercial roof replacement" and exclude "roof repair DIY".
  • You need volume beyond what LSA delivers in your area.
  • You want full data: search terms, conversion tracking in GA4, and the ability to test offers and landing pages.

In my own Google Ads accounts, a Dubai restaurant received 918 calls and 53,600 direction requests from AED 13.5K of search and local campaigns, and a lead generation account produced 4,830 conversions at AED 2.57 each. Neither business could use LSA, and neither needed it. Well-built search campaigns with call tracking did the job.

How to run LSA and Google Ads together

  1. Launch LSA for the core jobsLet LSA catch "near me" searches for your main services at a predictable cost per lead.
  2. Run search campaigns for high-value and niche jobsUse exact and phrase match keywords for the services LSA does not cover well, with tight negative keyword lists.
  3. Track every call in one placeUse call tracking and a CRM so LSA leads and search leads are counted the same way, and booked jobs are tied back to the source.
  4. Answer every callBoth LSA ranking and search conversion rates fall when calls go to voicemail. An AI receptionist can answer after hours and book the job.
  5. Compare cost per booked job, monthlyMove budget toward whichever channel books jobs cheaper, not whichever has cheaper leads.

Common mistakes with Local Services Ads

  • Not disputing invalid leads, so you pay for spam and wrong numbers.
  • Leaving business hours open when nobody answers, which hurts responsiveness and ranking.
  • Ignoring reviews. A competitor with 200 reviews will usually outrank you with 12.
  • Treating LSA as the whole strategy and turning off search campaigns that were bringing the bigger jobs.

Local Services Ads questions

Are Google Local Services Ads worth it?

For eligible service businesses that answer calls quickly and have good reviews, usually yes, because you pay for leads instead of clicks. They work best alongside a well-managed search campaign, not instead of one.

Is Google Guaranteed the same as Local Services Ads?

Google Guaranteed is the badge you earn by passing verification for Local Services Ads in eligible categories. The ads are the placement; the badge is the trust signal shown on them.

Can I use Local Services Ads in Dubai or Australia?

For most service categories, not at the time of writing. Businesses there rely on Google Search, Performance Max and a strong Google Business Profile. See Google Ads in Dubai and Google Ads in Australia.
